| MF DOOM (aka Zevlove X) is the man in the iron mask. A veteran since the late 80′s, he got his break when he was featured on the classic 3rd Bass single, “The Gas Face” (1989, Def Jam). In 1991, DOOM and his brother DJ Subroc formed the socially conscious group KMD and got signed to Elektra Records. Their debut album Mr. Hood received praise and became an underground classic, but it all came to a screeching halt when Subroc was killed in a fatal car accident. Elektra later dropped KMD, supposedly citing controversial lyrics and a racially charged album cover deemed inappropriate for the label.
Emotionally distraught, Zev disappeared for five years, only to remerge as MF DOOM, a super villain bent on world domination. In his efforts, DOOM has managed to make alliances and work with the likes of De La Soul, Prince Paul, Madlib, Danger Mouse, Prefuse 73, and Gorillaz. Whether his albums are billed under the moniker Viktor Vaughn, Madvillain, King Geedorah, Dangerdoom, or Metal Fingers, DOOM’s output has been consistently adored by critics, peers, and his remarkably devoted fanbase. Over the years, DOOM has continued to add to his substantial catalog by releasing a series of acclaimed instrumental albums entitled Special Herbs. |
